This month's donation goes to:
BACKYARD CATS OF BEDSTUY!
Each month I donate $1 for every item sold from Dream Meow Corner. Sadly, I only sold 1 item in July. I always round it up and have donated $25.
July 4th weekend I was incredibly busy, running around Brooklyn, taking care of cats. I walk by a stereo sound shop across from my house on the way and from the subway station. This particular weekend, I noticed a young mommie cat and her 4 baby kittens. I ran home to grab a few cans of food. Mom was hesitant to approach, but her babies came right up to me when I placed the food down on the ground. I messaged quite a few rescues in the neighborhood, but no one was responding. Only one rescue ended up writing me back-Backyard Cats of Bedstuy. They mentioned that there was a person in the neighborhood that has been trying to TNR the colony on the block and was aware of the cats in the shop. I was put in contact with them and they requested that I continue to feed them until they were able to set the traps. I fed them twice a day for over a month. In that time, mom and babies became comfortable, expecting my visits. I was able to pet them and even mom started to let me pet her.
The day finally came, yesterday and today, when they were trapped. Kittens were trapped first. I was told not to feed mom last night or this morning, so she would be easy to trap. Each time I walked by, she came running and I felt so bad leaving without feeding her. This morning, she followed me down the block and watched me walk away...it was the last time I will ever see her. I'm sad thinking about it. They were a beautiful way to begin and end my busy days. Knowing that they will be adopted and become someone's best friend, does make me feel better.
NYC animal shelters and rescues are in crisis mode at the moment. Many have closed their intakes due to the overwhelming volume of strays that are roaming our streets. They are recording some of the highest numbers to date.
That's why I do what I do. I feed them if I see them. I donate to rescues. I reach out to see if I can help.
